Tastes are Good News
for Canadian Barley
Do you know what the largest market for beer in the world is? Lots of people
would guess the United States or Germany. But, they would be wrong. It’s
China. Chinese beer drinkers will consume an estimated 38.3 billion litres in
2019. Where does Canada fit in to this? We supply the barley. Chinese tastes have trended
towards premium lagers and ales, which means companies need a quality malting
barley. Canadian barley is some of the best in the world when it comes to protein and
enzymatic activity, which are important when it comes to brewing high-quality beer.
We take a closer look at the relationship between Chinese beer drinkers and
Canadian malting barley starting on page 4.
As the craft spirit industry takes off in Canada, more and more women are entering
the field. We spoke to three rising stars in the Canadian spirits industry to hear
about their experiences: Caitlin Quinn, master distiller for Eau Claire Distillery in
Turner Valley, Alta.; Martha Lowry, head distiller for Mill Street Brewery and Distillery
in Toronto, Ont.; and Jenna Diubaldo, Manitoba’s first female distiller who plans to open
No. 13 Distilling Company in Winnipeg later this year. Read about these three rising
stars, starting on page 8.
