E D I TO R ’ S M E S SAGE
Andrew Harris, Poured Canada Editor
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Poured Canada, a new publication dedi-cated
to the beer, wine and spirits industry in Canada and across the globe.
We are proud to be partnered with Beer Canada, Spirits Canada and the
Canadian Vintners Association to ensure that producers can have their say on issues
affecting the industry.
Our first issue focuses on taxation. It’s no secret that Canadians pay a lot of tax on
the alcohol they purchase. In fact, we have one of the highest taxations rates on alcohol
in the world. Which is why it is concerning that the Canadian government added an
“escalator tax” that raises the tax rate on beverage alcohol every April 1. It is even more
concerning that legislation like this was quietly added with no industry consultations.
It’s an issue that has major potential impacts on producers, resulting in domestic job
losses and handicapping Canadian producers’ ability to compete in the global market.
You can read more about this issue and the effects it will have on producers and con-sumers
alike, and what it is being done to combat it starting on page 6.
On a lighter note, have you been underestimating the effect yeast has on the fla-vour
profile of beer? Many people have the misconception that hops alone are the basic
raw materials of beer, and they alone are responsible for the alcohol and flavour. But,
starting on page 14, you can read a deep dive into the science behind Saccharomyces
yeast, and how it influences the flavour and aroma of beer.
You also have the opportunity to get to know two Canadian producers a little bet-ter.
Yukon Brewing started as an idea around a campfire between two friends. Read
more about the Whitehorse-based brewery on page 28. Henry of Pelham is a Niagara-based
winery committed to innovation and sustainability. You can read more about
them on page 32.
So, please, enjoy the first issue of Poured Canada. If you have any comments, ques-tions
or if you’re interested in submitting articles in the future, please don’t hesitate to
contact me. I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. You can always reach me
at email@example.com. n
