 She believes the first response should be a public statement

 “You want to do that before too many people start writing  
 your story,” Nidle said. 
 Froese agreed, “I think as soon as you see something percolating, 
  you’ve got to get your ducks in a row and get ahead of it. If you  
 need to have a statement about something that you think the public  
 will be critical about, make that statement and put it up right  
 away on your website. 
 “I think people are going to talk about you, whether you’re in  
 the room or not, so you want to get out there.”

 “I think knowing who your cheerleaders are and asking them  
 to help support you when you need it is really key,” she said. 
 “You can say to them, ‘You know what? We made a mistake.  
 We own that mistake. We have learned a lesson from that mistake.  
 And we really want people to know that we care and that we’re  
 listening. Can you help tell people that for us? Do you understand  
 where we’re coming from? Can you share that with your network?’”  
 Froese added. 
 “It could be some bloggers, it might be digital influencers or it  
 could be a key customer or retailer or someone influential in the  
 hospitality trade. It’s voices like those that are thought leading, and  
 if they are in support of you, they can be your cheerleaders.”
